Snow Sports The winter snow in the Gastein Valley transforms the area into one of the finest and most beautiful ski regions in Salzburgerland. Although not as widely known in the English speaking world as it should be, the Gastein Valley (Gasteinertal) is one of the five largest ski areas in Austria with 44 lifts and over 200km of ski piste. The relatively high altitude makes Gasteinertal extremely snow safe with the season opening at Sportgastein (2700m) in mid-November and lasting through to late April. The high altitude also creates excellent snow conditions both on and off piste for Carvers and Boarders. In addition, Gastein attracts the world best with the FIS Snowboard World Cup in January and the Red Bull Playstreets competition in February (it has to be seen to be beleived!) The valley is best suited to high mileage intermediates wanting plenty of challenges. More advanced skiers should head to the off piste runs on Sportgastein or the steep runs on Graukogel, a short walk from the apartment. The skiing in the Gasteinertal is part of the Ski Amadé, Austria's largest ski region. Your ski pass for Bad Gastein will get you access to 860km of piste! While catering for downhill skiers and boarders, Gastein is a mecca for cross country skiers. With over 90-kilometers of impeccably groomed and maintained cross-country skiing tracks in landscapes of great natural beauty, Gastein is a true paradise for Nordic skiers. The Gasteinertal is renowned for it's skiing but don't take our word for it, click the links below for further information:.
